THE WEATHER WHEEL VISUALIZATION

A slowly rotating wheel displays historical weather data for 50 major cities in an innovative and novel way. Blue dots shrink and grow to indicate seasonal rainfall, while arrows orbit representing wind speeds. Hover over this image (and all images on this page) for an alternate view. Named Infographic of the Day at Fast Company's Co.Design blog.

@THEAUTOPOET TWITTER ICON & BACKGROUND

Branding for digitally delivered poetic non-sequiteurs. The idea of @theautopoet is to release unstudied writings into the world in an effort to combat a predilection towards over-editing and perfection – writing on autopilot.

CAR RANKING VISUALIZATION INTERFACE

A variation on Nightingale rose diagrams, this interface allows layered exploration of extensive car rating data. Blue and red circle segments indicate quality levels in different categories, but seen as a whole also give an overview of the state of the U.S. auto industry vs. International brands. Unpublished.

MIDI KEYBOARD DESIGN CONCEPT

Designed to look good in your home, this musical keyboard concept abandons the cheap spaceship look of most MIDI products in favor of serene simplicity. Pitch and modulation wheels are reimagined as tensioned faders at left, while more faders at top could be assigned to automation tasks. Click through to see video.

CNNMONEY 3D VIDEO CAROUSEL

Smoothly modeled and animated 3D carousel served for years as centerpiece of video landing page of the major financial news site, pulling in videos from a feed as they were published. Programming by Agustin Sevilla. The carousel is no longer online as the site has been redesigned.

SLIDER INTERFACE

Using the physical metaphor of a mixing desk, this polished software interface features ten sliders that all perform the same function of mildly upsetting Jakob Nielsen. Originally developed as a fun way for users to adjust Federal debt reduction priorities according to their political preferences, but could be used for any number of things – like looking good on a page like this, for example.

THE DOW PIANO AUDIO VISUALIZATION

Featured on FlowingData, Fast Company's Fast.Co blog, and several other design hubs, this interactive piece translates the ups and downs of the stock market into musical notes. Using a five-note scale spanning three octaves, pitch is determined by the daily closing numbers of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The variance in volume mirrors the trading volume changes throughout the year. Cross-published on CNNMoney, the piece inspired programmers of EA Sports' Fight Night Champion to make a similar system tracking their code revisions. Possibly related: NPR's Planet Money later produced a show where home prices were translated into brief operas.

MONKEY TALKS ANIMATED COMEDY SERIES

A futile-by-design attempt to create what the public wants, this five-episode series hits all the right notes in a clumsy chord: Robots, breasts, and funny monkeys. The intro sequence and set design is elegantly tied together through the use of a limited color palette and tightly composed shots, and the uniquely streamlined production process allows new episodes to be created in less than 24 hours.

GONE ANIMATED SHORT FILM

Art directed as a minimalist, black and white poetic geometric abstraction with an emotional center. While uncompromising and melancholy, this film with no dialog and the most spartan character designs you could imagine (no faces!) has connected deeply with an audience of 30,000. "Gone" has also been used as a music video by both The Ungrateful Guests (London) and Martin and James (Berlin), and has been shown in a theater within Polish virtual world Shmooze.pl.
